ÌìÌ츣Àû¿´Æ¬ academic Dr Jessica Adams has been appointed President of the British Phycological Society, the UK’s leading society dedicated to the study of algae.

Founded in 1952, the Society is a membership organisation and registered charity that aims to advance education and research in all aspects of the study of algae. It publishes research in the European Journal of Applied Phycology and other publications, making this research widely available.

One of the first societies in the world devoted to algae research and the largest in Europe, it also provides funding to support students and researchers to conduct projects and attend conferences and field courses across the UK.

Dr Adams is a Senior Research Scientist in Bioconversion and Biorefining at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at ÌìÌ츣Àû¿´Æ¬, with a specialist interest in seaweed, oats and aquatic plants.

Her research explores and develops algae-based solutions for sustainable food, eco-friendly products and other practical applications. She has led many high-profile research projects, published widely and contributed to national and industry initiatives in algae research and bioconversion.

Commenting on her appointment, Dr Adams said:

“It’s an honour to have been appointed. I am really looking forward to supporting the Society’s members, promoting the study of algae and helping foster the next generation of phycologists. Research in this field is important in the real-world, from sustainable food to eco-friendly products, and I am delighted to help the Society continue to improve our understanding and translate that into practical applications to change lives for the better.”

“As global environmental pressures increase, algae research is increasingly recognised for its potential in tackling climate change and the more sustainable use of natural resources. At ÌìÌ츣Àû¿´Æ¬, we are committed to research that addresses global environmental challenges and offers practical, evidence-based solutions.”

Dr Adams took over the presidency from Professor Saul Purton, University College London, at the British Phycological Society Annual Meeting, which was hosted by IBERS, ÌìÌ츣Àû¿´Æ¬ this week.
